ASTUR: The Roots Awaken is the opening chapter of an epic six-film saga spanning more than three thousand years.
In the first century, the Roman occupation is advancing across the northern territories of Hispania. Villages are destroyed, their inhabitants enslaved and entire mountains transformed into vast mining operations designed to extract the gold demanded by the Empire.
Following a failed act of resistance, Fiachra, Galén and Lucius are forced to cross the mountains in search of a community that may hold another way forward. Behind them, Brianna fights to protect the survivors while Drusus, the ruthless commander of the occupying forces, becomes determined to discover how three fugitives escaped through a landscape his armies cannot overcome.
Fiachra experiences the world differently. He notices changes in the wind, recognises paths where others see only wilderness and senses the suffering carried through the land. What initially appears to be instinct gradually reveals a deeper continuity connecting people, nature, memory and time.
Their journey leads beyond the known paths of the mountains to an ancient community devoted to observing, understanding and preserving knowledge. There, beneath a great yew tree, Fiachra begins to perceive that the struggle unfolding around him belongs to a much larger story—one that neither begins nor ends with Rome.
Historical, grounded and cinematic, The Roots Awaken is a story of occupation, resistance and survival, but also of the invisible inheritance carried by a land and its people. It asks what must be protected when victory is impossible, and how memory can endure long after kingdoms and empires have disappeared.
The film begins a six-part cinematic cycle moving across different periods of history:
I. The Roots Awaken II. The Memory of the Wind III. A New Hope IV. The Return of the Darkness V. From Light to the Shadows VI. The Silences of Tomorrow
Each film tells a distinct story while forming part of a single continuum connecting generations separated by centuries: the same land, the same memory and the roots that continue beneath them.
